Former FYE researcher designs Latitude Bridge

Thu 19th May, 2011 by Team FYE

A former Face Your Elephant researcher has helped design a new bridge for the Latitude Festival in Suffolk. Mark Hammond worked on the Face Your Elephant project between July 2010 and February 2011 after finishing a Bachelor of Architecture degree, and has gone on to use his skills in partnership with our friends at Festival Republic.

"Working with Face Your Elephant not only improved my knowledge of the science and engineering of climate change, but also gave me the opportunity to use these skills on a practical project. The new permanent bridge replaces a temporary one, thus removing the energy intensive operation of delivering, assembling and removing the bridge every 12 months. After I joined the project we were also able to reduce the amount of materials with high embodied energy such as steel and marine ply."

"The bridge is an example of how we can reduce embodied energy without compromising on design. I can't wait for it to open to the public over Latitude Festival weekend to see what the public make of it."
